Orangeburg sits along I-26 between Columbia and Charleston, making it a convenient stop for travelers crossing South Carolina. The college town hosts South Carolina State University and Claflin University, with US 301 running through downtown and US 178 connecting west to Aiken. Despite its name suggesting citrus groves, Orangeburg actually got its moniker from early orange cultivation that ended when harsh freezes proved the climate too unpredictable for the fruit.
