Ontonagon is a small lakefront town in Michigan's Upper Peninsula where the Ontonagon River meets Lake Superior. Highway 45 runs north-south through town, connecting to Wisconsin 60 miles south, while Route 38 heads east along the lakeshore to Baraga. The famous Ontonagon Boulder, a massive copper specimen discovered in the river in 1843, now sits in the Smithsonian after miners hauled it out with block and tackle.
