Onawa is a small county seat in western Iowa, about 40 miles north of Omaha along the Missouri River valley. US Highway 175 runs east-west through town, connecting to Interstate 680 near Blair, Nebraska. Most visitors arrive from the Omaha area via this route. The town sits amid the scenic Loess Hills region with rolling farmland. The modern Monona County Courthouse from the 1960s stands out on the courthouse square, replacing the original 1890s building.
