Oakland is a farming community of 1,400 in southwest Iowa, about 30 miles from Omaha. Highway 6 runs through town and connects to Interstate 80 for longer trips. Most residents commute west to Council Bluffs or the Omaha metro area for work. The town's restored 1899 Carnegie Library still operates as the community library, one of the few original Carnegie libraries still serving its intended purpose in Iowa.
