Oakes is a farming town of 1,858 in southeastern North Dakota, positioned along US Highway 83 about 60 miles south of Jamestown. Most visitors arrive via Interstate 94, exiting at Jamestown and following US 83 south through wheat country. The town sits in the Maple River valley with State Highway 1 providing east-west connections. Oakes is the birthplace of what became the Toro lawn mower company, founded by Carl Melroe in 1914.
