Oakdale lies just east of Saint Paul in Washington County, connected to the Twin Cities by Interstate 94 and Highway 36. Most visitors take I-94, which runs right through town and provides direct access to downtown Saint Paul 12 miles west. The city sits on rolling terrain dotted with small lakes, typical of the St. Croix River valley. Oakdale houses the original 3M headquarters campus, where Post-it Notes were invented in the 1970s.
