Nowata is a small county seat in northeastern Oklahoma, about 45 miles from Tulsa via US Highway 169. The town of 3,500 sits in rolling oil country where Highway 60 intersects the main north-south route. Most visitors drive up from Tulsa in under an hour, while Kansas travelers use the same highway from Coffeyville. The name comes from a Delaware Indian word meaning "welcome."
