Newton is a small East Texas town of 2,534 people surrounded by pine forests near the Louisiana border. It sits on US Highway 190, about 25 miles east of Jasper and 140 miles northeast of Houston. The town serves as Newton County's seat and a gateway to Sabine National Forest. The 1902 red brick courthouse on the town square still functions as the community's official tornado shelter.
