Newland is a small mountain town in western North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, sitting at 3,300 feet elevation as Avery County's seat. US Highway 221 runs right through town, connecting south to Marion and north toward Boone and Virginia. Highway 194 provides access to nearby Banner Elk and the ski areas. The 1912 red brick courthouse with white columns dominates the town square.
