Newington is a small Screven County town of about 400 people along US Highway 301, roughly 45 miles northwest of Savannah. The main route runs north to Statesboro and south toward the coast through pine country and farmland. Freight trains still follow the old Savannah River Railroad corridor through the center of town several times each day.
