Newellton is a small Louisiana Delta town of about 1,000 people in Tensas Parish, positioned along the Mississippi River floodplain. US Highway 65 runs north-south through town, connecting to Tallulah 15 miles south and continuing toward Arkansas. For longer trips, drivers use I-20 via Tallulah to reach Monroe or Vicksburg. The town is home to Winter Quarters State Historic Site, where Grant's army camped during the winter of 1864 before the final Vicksburg campaign.
