New Effington is a farming town of 269 people in northeastern South Dakota, eight miles from the North Dakota border. Reach it via Highway 10 from Sisseton (15 miles southeast) or Aberdeen (60 miles southwest). The town sits in classic prairie country where grain elevators dot the landscape. Originally called just "Effington" when founded in 1881, residents added "New" in 1883 due to postal confusion with another South Dakota community.
