New Canton is a tiny Mississippi River town in western Illinois, accessible via scenic Route 96 that follows the river bluffs. Most visitors come from Hannibal, Missouri, about 25 miles northwest, or connect from US Route 36 to the east. The village sits on bluffs overlooking the river valley in Pike County's farm country. New Canton still operates one of the Mississippi's last cable ferry crossings, where cars cross to Missouri on a hand-pulled ferry system dating to the 1800s.
