Murphysboro is the Jackson County seat in southern Illinois, about 10 miles northwest of Carbondale via Route 127. Take I-64 to Exit 61 from the north, or follow Route 149 east-west through town. The city sits along the Big Muddy River in rolling hill country between the prairie and Shawnee National Forest. It's home to the General John A. Logan Museum in a Victorian mansion belonging to the Civil War general who helped create Memorial Day.
