Mountainburg is a small Arkansas River Valley town of 566 people in Crawford County, positioned where the Ozarks meet farmland. Highway 71 runs north-south through town, connecting to Fort Smith 25 miles southeast and continuing toward Fayetteville. Interstate 40 passes just south, making it accessible for cross-country travelers. The town sits at the base of a ridge that early settlers called "the mountain," which still dominates the eastern horizon.
