Mount Vernon is Grant County's seat in eastern Oregon's high desert, home to 364 people in the John Day River valley. Most visitors arrive via US Highway 26 from Bend and Prineville to the west, though US 395 connects north to Pendleton and Highway 19 heads south toward Burns. The semi-arid climate brings hot summers and cold winters at 2,600 feet elevation. Grant County Regional Airport serves the area just outside town. The 1959 Grant County Courthouse anchors this remote community.
