Mount Vernon is a small Alabama city of about 1,300 people located 30 miles north of Mobile on US Highway 43. The main route connects Mobile to Tuscaloosa, making it a natural stopping point for long-distance travelers. State Route 156 provides east-west access to surrounding Mobile County communities. The area features rolling pine forests typical of Alabama's Gulf Coastal Plain. Mount Vernon is famous for its giant concrete dinosaur sculpture that has watched over the highway since the 1960s.
