Mound City is a small river town of 681 people in southern Illinois, just off Interstate 57 near the Ohio River. Take Exit 1 from I-57 and follow Highway 51 into town. It's about 8 miles north of Cairo and sits in the flat bottomlands where the Ohio and Mississippi rivers converge. The town gets its name from ancient Native American burial mounds that once covered this area.
