Monument is a tiny ranching town in eastern Oregon's high desert, sitting along Highway 402 about 45 miles north of John Day. Most visitors arrive via US 395, either from the south through John Day or from Washington's Tri-Cities area. The town serves as headquarters for the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument at the historic Cant Ranch, where pioneer buildings and paleontological exhibits share the same grounds.
