Monticello is the seat of Lawrence County in south-central Mississippi, positioned along US Highway 84 about 60 miles south of Jackson. The city sits in the piney woods region and serves as a hub for the surrounding rural area. Most visitors arrive via Highway 84 from Brookhaven to the east or continue west toward Natchez, while Highway 27 provides the main north-south connection to Interstate 55. The 1914 Lawrence County Courthouse dominates the town square with its red brick facade and century-old clock tower.
