Monterey anchors California's central coast where Highway 1 meets the Monterey Peninsula. It's a two-hour drive south from San Francisco via Highway 101 to Highway 156 west, then Highway 1 south. Highway 68 connects east to Salinas and inland areas. The Mediterranean climate brings cool, foggy summers and mild winters. Monterey Regional Airport is 3 miles southeast of downtown. Cannery Row, once Steinbeck's sardine canning district, now houses the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium.
