The city serves as Monroe County's seat and lies at the intersection of State Route 21 and US Highway 84. Known as the "Literary Capital of Alabama," it's the childhood home of Harper Lee and Truman Capote, with the historic courthouse square serving as the inspiration for the courthouse in "To Kill a Mockingbird."
