Monroe lies in south-central Wisconsin, 40 miles southwest of Madison via Highway 69 to I-39/90. The city serves as Green County's seat in rolling dairy country. Highway 69 provides the main north-south route, while Highway 81 runs east-west through town. Monroe proudly claims the title "Swiss Cheese Capital of the USA" and celebrates with an annual Cheese Days festival featuring traditional Swiss and limburger cheeses.
