Monongah is a small West Virginia town of 837 people along the Monongahela River, about 15 miles northeast of Fairmont via US Route 19. From I-79, take Exit 137 and follow Route 19 north into the valley. The town sits in Appalachian foothills with typical humid summers and snowy winters that can make the hilly roads tricky. It's home to a memorial for the 1907 Monongah Mine disaster, the deadliest mining accident in U.S. history.
