Mitchell is a small Nebraska Panhandle town of about 2,000 people on US Highway 26, roughly 20 miles east of Scottsbluff. It sits along the historic Oregon Trail route in agricultural country. Most visitors come via US 26 from Scottsbluff or connecting from I-80 to the south. The town is famous for its enormous truck stop complex that serves as a regional landmark for cross-country travelers.
