Mitchell is a tiny farming community of 117 people in north-central Iowa, reached via Highway 9 which runs east-west through town. Most visitors arrive from Interstate 35 near Osage, about 15 miles west, or from other small towns along Highway 9. The area experiences typical Iowa weather with cold winters and warm summers across the gently rolling agricultural landscape. Mitchell was named after railroad financier Alexander Mitchell, highlighting the rail industry's role in the town's 19th-century founding.
