Mill City is a small timber town of about 1,900 people located 20 miles east of Salem along Highway 22. The main route follows the North Santiam River through the Cascade foothills, continuing east to Central Oregon ski areas and high desert destinations. Highway 214 from Silverton offers a scenic alternative through rural areas. The town sits in dense Douglas fir forests where the river carved a canyon through the mountains. Mill City's centerpiece is a 1939 covered bridge spanning the North Santiam River downtown.
