Mexico is Missouri's Audrain County seat, located along US Highway 54 in the state's agricultural heartland. The main route follows Highway 54 north from Columbia (45 minutes) or south from Hannibal. Interstate 70 travelers connect via Highway 54 north of Columbia or Highway 15 from Bowling Green. The city got its unusual name from a Revolutionary War veteran who hoped to recoup losses from failed Mexican investments.
