Mesilla preserves its 1840s Spanish colonial charm just minutes from Las Cruces via University Avenue and Avenida de Mesilla. The historic plaza features adobe buildings where the 1854 Gadsden Purchase was signed, transferring the territory from Mexico to the US. Visitors arrive mostly via I-25 Exit 140, with Las Cruces International Airport 15 miles away. The original Gadsden Museum still operates in the building where the treaty was signed.
