Merrill sits where two rivers meet in Wisconsin's Northwoods, about 20 miles north of Wausau via Highway 51. This main route connects south to Milwaukee and north to the lake country around Minocqua. Highway 64 runs east-west through downtown toward Antigo. The city serves as a gateway to extensive forests, lakes, and snowmobile trails. Its restored 1907 railroad depot houses a logging museum featuring massive white pine logs from the area's lumber boom days.
