Mellette is a farming town of 199 people in north-central South Dakota's wheat country. US Highway 212 runs right through town, connecting to Aberdeen 35 miles northeast and Redfield 25 miles west. The grain elevator towers over the prairie, visible for miles across the flat agricultural landscape.
