Mekoryuk is a Yup'ik village on remote Nunivak Island, 164 miles west of Bethel in the Bering Sea. No roads connect it to mainland Alaska - access is only by small plane to Mekoryuk Airport. The village has gravel roads connecting homes and community buildings, with locals traveling by ATV or snowmobile. The island hosts one of Alaska's largest free-roaming reindeer herds with over 3,000 animals.
