McFarland sits 25 miles north of Bakersfield on Highway 99 in California's agricultural San Joaquin Valley. Most visitors drive up from Bakersfield or down from Fresno, with longer trips coming from LA via the 99. The town serves farming communities with flat fields stretching toward distant mountains under hot, dry summers and mild winters. McFarland High School's 1987 state championship cross-country team inspired the Disney movie "McFarland, USA."
