Mayville is the county seat of Traill County in eastern North Dakota's Red River Valley, about 45 miles northwest of Fargo on US Highway 200. The town sits in prime agricultural country with rich black soil that produces some of the region's best wheat and soybeans. Mayville State University, founded in 1889 as a teacher training school, remains the town's most distinctive feature and continues its educational mission today.
