Maxwell is a tiny ranching town in northeastern New Mexico's high plains, sitting along historic US Highway 56 about 25 miles east of Interstate 25. The main route connects east to Clayton and west to Springer, following the old Santa Fe Trail through prairie country at 6,200 feet elevation. You can still see wagon ruts from the original Santa Fe Trail cutting across the landscape near town.
