Mason sits in the Texas Hill Country about 100 miles northwest of Austin, accessible via US Highway 87 and State Highway 29. This county seat of 2,000 people occupies rolling limestone hills with oak trees and granite outcroppings. Most visitors drive from Austin via US 290 west to Fredericksburg, then Highway 87 north, while San Antonio travelers take I-10 west to Junction, then Highway 87 north. Mason's pink granite quarries supplied stone for the Texas State Capitol in the 1880s.
