Mascoutah is a small city of about 9,000 people in southwestern Illinois, 25 miles east of St. Louis via Interstate 64. State Route 4 runs north-south through downtown, connecting to Belleville and other nearby communities. The big draw here is Scott Air Force Base and MidAmerica Airport sitting right next to town, just 2 miles from the city center. Downtown still follows the original 1837 street grid laid out by German settlers.
