Marmet is a small river town about 20 minutes southeast of Charleston via US Route 119. Located in a narrow Kanawha River valley surrounded by forested hills, it's a quick drive from Charleston but feels worlds away. The town sits along a historic coal and barge route, with Interstate 64 providing the main highway access for out-of-town visitors. The centerpiece is the 1934 Marmet Locks and Dam, where you can watch massive coal barges navigate the concrete structure that keeps the Kanawha River navigable for commercial traffic.
