Mapleton is a small Kansas farming community of 213 people in Bourbon County, about 20 miles southwest of Fort Scott. US Highway 54 runs right through town, connecting it to Fort Scott and Nevada, Missouri. Most locals drive northeast to Fort Scott for shopping and services. The town's historic grain elevator towers over the surrounding prairie and serves as a landmark visible for miles along the highway.
