Manhattan occupies a 13-mile island between the Hudson and East rivers, accessible via numerous bridges and tunnels. Major approaches include I-87 from the north through the Triborough Bridge, I-495 from Long Island via the Midtown Tunnel, and routes from New Jersey through the Lincoln or Holland tunnels. The FDR Drive and West Side Highway provide north-south circulation. Three airports serve the area: LaGuardia (8 miles), Newark (11 miles), and JFK (26 miles). The famous numbered street grid starts at 14th Street.
