Manhattan anchors north-central Kansas as home to Kansas State University, sitting in the scenic Flint Hills about 10 miles north of I-70 via Highway 177. US-24 runs north-south through downtown, connecting to Topeka and Kansas City, while K-18 provides the main east-west route. The Konza Prairie Biological Station just outside town maintains 8,600 acres of original tallgrass prairie where a bison herd still grazes.
