Mammoth is a former copper mining town in Arizona's Sonoran Desert, about 45 miles northeast of Tucson via State Route 77. Visitors typically drive up from Tucson through Oracle, while Phoenix travelers take I-10 east to SR-77 south. The town sits at 2,400 feet in the Santa Catalina foothills with classic desert scenery. The massive gray slag pile from the old copper mines still towers over the community, visible for miles.
