Lusk sits on US Highway 20 in eastern Wyoming's cattle country, about 85 miles from Interstate 25 and 130 miles from Rapid City. The high plains town connects north to Newcastle via Highway 85 and serves as a supply hub for surrounding ranches. At over 5,000 feet elevation, winters are harsh with persistent snow and wind. The old stone county jail now houses the Stagecoach Museum.
