Lonaconing is a small Appalachian town of 889 people in western Maryland, about 15 miles southwest of Cumberland via Route 36. Long-distance visitors typically arrive through Cumberland using I-68, US 220, and Route 36. The town sits in a valley along Georges Creek, surrounded by wooded hills typical of Allegany County. A preserved 1830s iron furnace stack stands as a unique reminder of the area's pre-coal industrial past.
