Lockport lies 20 miles northeast of Buffalo in Niagara County, built around the Erie Canal locks that lift boats up the 60-foot Niagara Escarpment. Take I-990 north from Buffalo to Route 31 east, or use I-290 to Route 31 from Rochester. The original 1820s canal locks, carved straight into the limestone bedrock, still stand downtown as a historic landmark.
