Lincoln is a small city of 4,400 people just south of Bismarck, connected by US Highway 83. Most visitors arrive via Interstate 94, then take US 83 south about 10 miles. The city serves mainly as a bedroom community for the state capital, with easy access to Bismarck Municipal Airport 15 miles northeast. Lincoln houses the North Dakota State Penitentiary, which has operated here since 1885.
