Lignite is a tiny farming town of 167 people in northwestern North Dakota, just 15 miles from Canada. Highway 5 runs right through town, connecting it to Bowbells 12 miles southeast and extending west toward the oil fields. Most visitors come from Minot (60 miles south via US-52) or Williston (45 miles southwest on Highway 5). The town got its name from the lignite coal deposits scattered throughout Burke County's prairie landscape.
