Lexington sits where I-64 and I-81 cross in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, about 50 miles northwest of Lynchburg. This college town of 7,500 is home to both Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University. Most visitors arrive via I-81 from Harrisonburg or Roanoke, or take I-64 from Richmond. The downtown's Gothic Revival buildings include the classroom where Stonewall Jackson once taught artillery tactics.
