Laurel sits along the Yellowstone River between Billings and the Beartooth Mountains, serving as a gateway to Yellowstone National Park via US Highway 212. Interstate 90 connects it to Billings (15 miles east) and Bozeman (140 miles west), while Highway 212 heads south toward Red Lodge. The Union Pacific Railroad runs through downtown, and the city's restored 1925 railroad depot now operates as a community theater and event center.
