Laurel is a small farming town of 278 people in central Iowa's Marshall County. Highway 14 runs north-south through town, connecting to Interstate 35 near Marshalltown about 15 miles east. Most trips are short local runs to Tama or Marshalltown, while longer drives head to Des Moines 45 miles southwest. The grain elevator remains the town's most visible landmark across the flat prairie.
